Hi everyone, and welcome to my site where you can find out about Rum, its history and the way in which this drink has so many creative possibilities. You can join me as I capture stories about Rum and weave them into delicious recipes of infusions that you can make at home. I describe myself as an enthusiastic amateur and my love affair with fermented cane juice started late in life and I am making a valiant effort to catch up.

The wonderful thing about Blogging is that it allows me to share this knowledge with you and help you to discover the backstory to Rum drinking and infusions in a simple and accessible way that you can also recreate in your own home.

Typically, in the Caribbean (and many other societies) it is the stories, folklore and songs which as the repository for this information; but it was the reflections after having my own children that spurred me onto creating more creative methods to pass this on to our next generations.

Discovering Rum in reverse

To be honest, my story starts in reverse. I grew up in a Caribbean household in the North of England where Rum was part of everyday life. From the cradle to the grave, pouring Rum featured in every aspect of our community’s life. It was present to start life at christening, to joint lives together through marriage, to celebrate live at funerals; but also to remember lives continually when people are gathered together through stories and libations to ensure those who have passed on live on.

My family were part of a strict religious community where abstinence was the order of the day and so this meant that we didn’t drink but I was a keen observer. What I saw fascinated me as I watched its power to bring people together, reinforce a sense of belonging, and contribute to physical health by combining with Herbal cures.

After 20 years playing competitive sport at a national level, I finally tasted the demon drink and started to in-experience (rather than experience) Rum. Over the next few years I developed a career, got married, raised a family and started to travel more in the Caribbean connecting with my wider family network through marriage. It was this these travels that planted the seed of an idea to modernise an old tradition of infusing Rum but with a twist. My first trip to a beach Rum shop in Dominica saw me emerge with a new name with the locals “Mr Two-Shot” but that’s a story for another time over a fresh bottle.

The Birth of an ‘Enthusiastic amateur’

Alongside my day job in Sports and then Mental Health, I convinced a Grenadian Rum brand to allow me to promote their Rum as its first Rum Ambassador. Working at drinks industry events, I noticed that a regular comment made by ‘newbie’ Rum tasters was the fear and trepidation about the strength and power of Rum. Ever one to rise to a challenge, I began to prepare Rum in ways to surprise and engage the memory and senses of the drinker (I learned later that this was called Mixology). At that time, my aim was to Educate (about Rum and the history that formed it), Connect (with others and their own personal stories) and promote Wellbeing (through sharing some knowledge about Rum Herbalism). I had finally became an enthusiastic Amateur ! (the emphasis should be on the Amateur)

More than just a drink

It’s often this last point that causes much of the raised eyebrows in my audience. So let me confirm that my medical degree is from Google University; and whilst I recognise that moderation is always a good thing to be practiced, there is some evidence that there can be health benefits of drinking Rum;

  • Improving heart health by lowering blood pressure and relaxing the body
  • Reducing the risk of a common cold
  • Boosting longevity through mild antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects
  • Strengthening the immune system
  • Preventing arthritis
  • Acting as an antiseptic
  • Reducing your risk of gallstones
  • Preventing mental conditions
  • Managing diabetic symptoms, when consumed in moderation
  • Decreasing muscle pain due to its sedative nature

So, next time you’re debating which drink to order, consider what more rum has to offer.
